Arizona was a part of the New Mexico Territory in 1850. In 1863 it was accorded a
territory. In 1912 Arizona became the 48th of the United States.
The name of Arizona comes from the Spanish "Arida Zona" for "dry
belt" and fits its name exactly.
Around the capital city of Phoenix, aerospace industries have been developed due to the
natural resources of aluminum and aluminum mills, and hydro-electric generation at Hoover
dam.
After Flagstaff, the race course enters the huge Grand Canyon Lands. It's is a land of
mesas ("mesa" is Spanish for "table").
The results of natural erosion have the appearance of the formative arts of God's creation.)
Bicyclists pass through the middle of the Canyon Lands National Park. Then through Four Corners (the place where four states' borders meet). Then they will arrive in San Juan County on the southern edge of Colorado.
