Iditarod (I-DIT-a-rod) is a ghost town and where the trail got its name. Between 1908 and 1925, $35,000,000 in gold was taken from this area. As the sign says, here is just the middle of the trail. But the race only goes through Iditarod on odd years. The Cabin behind the sign is used as the office. Inside, it is made comfortable by a wood stove. Satellite telephone with fax is available for the race officials use. Maybe a computer with modem will be added in 1997? High-tech in wild nature.
