He likes an easy pace for himself. He says I enjoy the race, but this pace was faster than other mushers.
The race is 10 days, and if the musher pushes the dogs too hard in the first stages, it is difficult to have a good finish in the more important later stages. A steady pace is what it takes to be in the top finishers.
